You wait for her to farrow (give birth - for pigs, a pregnancy lasts exactly 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days). You wait for the piglets to grow up to see which ones will make the show pen and which ones won’t.

You don’t check the piglets every day to see if they’ve reached maturity within their first month of life. You don’t panic when they look gangly and skinny going through their “teenage” growth spurt.

You trust the process. And you let time do the heavy lifting.

Investing in the stock market works exactly the same way.

And nobody understood that better than a hog farmer from Baytown, Texas named Mr. Womack (first name lost to posterity).

The Man in Overalls at the Merrill Lynch Office

It’s the late 1950s. Houston, Texas.

A frustrated drilling-rig businessman named Melvid Hogan walks into a Merrill Lynch office, defeated.

He’d been trying everything to win in the market — technical analysis, fundamental analysis, hot tips, clever trades. And every single year, without fail, he ended the year with a net loss.

That day, a broker pulled him aside.

“There’s someone you need to meet. But you’d better hurry. He only comes in here once every few years — except when he’s buying.”

Hogan looked across the crowded office.

Sitting in the corner, in overalls, was a rice and pig farmer from down in Baytown.

His name was Mr. Womack.

Hogan walked over and introduced himself. The two men talked about farming. About duck hunting. And gradually, the conversation turned to stocks.

Mr. Womack reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a handwritten list of tickers — scrawled in pencil on a folded piece of yellowed notebook paper.

Hogan looked at the list.

He couldn’t believe his eyes.

This farmer had made over 50% long-term capital gains on the entire group.

Individual positions were up 100%. 200%. One had gone up 500%!

Over 40 years of investing, Mr. Womack had never had a loss on balance.

Hogan was so moved by the encounter that he wrote it all down and sent it to a financial writer named John Train, who published the story in Fortune Magazine in 1978 under the title “How Mr. Womack Made a Killing.”

It became one of the most passed-around investing stories in history.

No Bloomberg terminal. No financial advisor. No MBA.

Just a farmer in overalls with a pencil and a philosophy that cut through every Wall Street myth ever invented.

The 5 Rules That Built A Farmer’s Fortune

Rule 1: There’s a Planting Season and a Harvest Season

I get this one in my bones.

You don’t plant corn in December. You don’t harvest in March. Every season has its purpose — and trying to force the timeline destroys the crop.

Mr. Womack treated the stock market the same way.

❌ He wasn’t buying and selling every week
❌ He wasn’t reacting to earnings reports, Fed announcements or whatever the talking heads were screaming about that morning

He’d buy a basket of stocks. Go back to the farm. And not return to Houston until the season had completely turned — sometimes one year later, sometimes four.

He said it best:

“You can’t make money buying stocks every day, week, or month of the year, any more than you could plant rice every day, week, or month and make a crop.”

Most investors lose money not because they pick bad stocks.

They lose money because they can’t leave well enough alone.

They plant seeds. Then dig them up to check on them. Then replant. Then panic when it storms. Then sell everything before the harvest.

Do this instead: Pick a quarterly review date. Put it in your calendar. Everything between now and that date is noise. Let the crop grow.

Rule 2: The Best Time to Buy Is When Everyone Else is Selling

This is where Mr. Womack separated himself from 99.9% of investors.

He didn’t just tolerate bad news.

He waited for it.

When headlines screamed that the market was hitting new lows. When experts predicted another 200-point drop in the Dow. When retail investors were dumping everything they owned —

That’s when Mr. Womack drove into Houston.

Before leaving, he’d sit down with a Standard & Poor’s Stock Guide and select around 30 stocks that had fallen below $10 per share — solid, profitable, dividend-paying companies that nobody on Wall Street was talking about.

Pecan growers. Home furnishings. Machine makers.

He’d write them down. Drive to the broker’s office. Buy $25,000 worth.

Then go back to the farm.

As a pig farmer, this instantly clicked for me.

When pork prices collapse, you don’t sell your herd in a panic. You buy more — cheap — and wait for the cycle to turn. The lower your cost, the higher your profit when the market comes back around.

Mr. Womack said it himself: he’d rather buy stocks than pigs in a down market.

“At least stocks pay dividends. Pigs just eat your feed.”

Do this instead: The next time markets drop 20% and your gut says sell — remember Mr. Womack. Open your brokerage. Buy more of what you already own. Then go back to the “farm”.

Rule 3: Buy What You Can Explain To A 5-Year Old

Mr. Womack followed the KISS strategy: Keep It Simple Stupid.

No derivatives. No leveraged ETFs. No hot IPOs promising to revolutionize an industry.

He bought boring, profitable businesses he understood. Companies that had survived downturns before and paid their shareholders along the way.

This wasn’t a lack of intelligence or sophistication on his part.

This was wisdom that Warren Buffett built a $130 billion fortune on.

Buffett’s famous rule:

“Never invest in a business you can’t explain to a five-year-old.”

Mr. Womack never heard of Warren Buffett.

He just naturally thought like him.

~

One of the best ways to invest in a simple, diversified basket of proven companies is through a well-structured IRA — the same tax-advantaged account that quietly compounds wealth in the background while you go about your life.

If you’re looking for the right account to start or optimize your investing strategy, here’s a list of the top 10 IRAs for 2026.

~

Do this instead: Can you explain how a company you want to invest in makes money in one sentence? To a 5-year old? If yes, consider owning it. If no, don’t touch it.

The most boring investments almost always win over time.

Rule 4: Don’t Chase the Top or the Bottom — “Close” Wins

Here’s the mistake that keeps most investors permanently on the sidelines.

They’re waiting for the perfect moment.

The exact bottom. The ideal entry point. The bat signal that says “BUY NOW.”

I hate to break it to you, but that signal never comes. And if it does, the time to make massive profits from it is already over.

Mr. Womack never tried to nail the bottom.

He was happy to buy anywhere in the bottom range. Never tried to nail the top either — he sold somewhere near the top, collected his gains, and went home.

His reasoning was airtight:

“If you can get a cost position in a stock’s bottom price range, it will forgive a multitude of misjudgments later.”

Buy cheap enough and you can sell too early and still make money.

A good entry price is the ultimate margin of safety.

Do this instead: Stop waiting for “the right time.“ If the market is meaningfully down from its highs, that’s close enough. Buy.

You don’t need to catch the exact bottom to build real wealth.

Rule 5: When the Price Drops — Buy More

This one breaks every instinct most people have.

When a stock drops after they buy it, most investors panic.

They sell to “cut their losses.” They swear off investing. They wait on the sidelines until everything feels safe again.

Mr. Womack did the exact opposite.

When prices dropped further after his initial purchase, he drove back into Houston and bought more.

In 1970, when the market plummeted further than he’d expected — he added another $25,000 to his existing positions.

The result?

He made what John Train called “a virtual killing on the whole package.”

Buying more at lower prices does two powerful things simultaneously:

It lowers your average cost and..

It increases your dividend yield

Both dramatically improve your odds of a significant profit when the cycle eventually turns.

This isn’t reckless. This is the disciplined, unemotional behavior that separates wealth-builders from everyone else.

Do this instead: When markets (or a particular stock you own/are watching) drop 20% or more, increase your regular contribution — even if it’s only by 1%. If you normally invest $500/month, push it to $700.

You’re not catching a falling knife. You’re buying the same quality companies at a discount.

The Lesson That Ties It All Together

Mr. Womack wasn’t a genius.

He didn’t have a team of analysts, eight computer monitors or a corner office overlooking Manhattan.

He had mud on his boots. Calluses on his hands. And a clarity of thinking that most investors spend their entire lives chasing and never find.

He understood something that sounds simple but is almost impossibly hard to actually practice:

The market is not a casino. It’s a farm.

There are seasons. There are cycles. There’s a time to plant and a time to harvest.

And in-between those two — you wait. You tend. You trust the process.

The investors who treat it like a casino — trading in and out, reacting to every headline, chasing every hot tip — almost always end up with less than they started with.

The farmers?

The ones who buy when everyone else is running. Who hold through the noise. Who collect their dividends quietly while the world panics around them. Who sell when the headlines are euphoric and everyone thinks stocks only go up?

They build quiet, lasting wealth.

Every single time.

— Charlie

📌 P.S. — If market volatility has you second-guessing your investment strategy and you want help building a plan you can actually stick to, book a private 1:1 strategy session with me. length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

Can we be real honest with each other for a sec?

Last week I posted a TikTok about something that’s been on my mind for awhile, and based on the comments blowing up my phone, I know I’m not alone.

See when I graduated high school and started college, I was dating someone who was TERRIBLE with money.

I’m talking, his parents gave him their credit card, paid for his rent, his vehicle and basically any other expense he had, and told him it was fine if we went dutch on every date.

If you’re not from Lancaster County, PA like I am, this means we split the bill.

Even though his split wasn’t actually his money, it was his mom’s.

After two years, I’d had enough.

And while I didn’t know at the time I’d end up marrying a wonderful guy who sees money the same way I do, I absolutely knew at 20 that I was NOT going to be supporting a mama’s boy who saw money only as something someone else gave him for the rest of my adult life.

When it comes to building wealth and living a life where you’re not secretly bitter about every financial decision, having a partner who shares your money mindset isn’t just nice to have.

It’s everything.

I’m not talking about marrying rich.

I’m talking about being with someone who gets it.
<div what really matters long-term.

According to research from Kansas State University, arguments about money are the leading predictor of divorce.

Not cheating. Not in-laws.

Money.

And it makes sense when you think about it.

Money touches literally everything in your life.

Where you live, how you vacation, whether you can quit that job you hate, if you’ll retire at 55 or 75, whether you stress about the electric bill or sleep peacefully at night.

When you and your partner aren’t aligned on money, you’re basically rowing a boat in opposite directions.

One person is trying to save for a house while the other is financing a new car.

One person wants to invest for early retirement while the other thinks investing is “too risky” and keeps everything in a savings account earning basically nothing.

It’s exhausting.

And over time, that exhaustion turns into resentment.

What “Money Aligned” Actually Means

Being money aligned doesn’t mean you both need to make the same salary. It doesn’t even mean you need to have the same spending habits.

It means you share the same core beliefs about money and where you want it to take you.

Do you both believe in living below your means?

Do you both understand that investing is how you actually build wealth, not just working harder and saving more?

Do you both want financial independence, or is one of you cool with working until 70?

Are you both willing to make short-term sacrifices for long-term freedom?

Does one of you think “you only live once” (YOLO) justifies every impulse purchase while the other is trying to build something?

These aren’t small differences.

These are life-altering, dream-crushing, anger-building differences.

The Resentment That Nobody Warns You About

Let me paint you a picture. And it’s one 20-year old me envisioned as I stomped my way to my ex-boyfriend’s apartment to tell him he needed to grow up and it wouldn’t be with me!

You’re diligently investing 20% of your income.

You pack your lunch. You skip the girls’ trips sometimes.

You’re building your portfolio, watching it grow, feeling proud of your discipline.

Meanwhile, your partner is spending every dime of their paycheck on Amazon, or financing that new Tesla — racking up credit card debt, and wondering why you’re “so stressed about money all the time.“

Fast forward five years.

You’ve built a solid investment portfolio.

They have $0 saved, a bunch of stuff they don’t use, and an upside down car loan.

Now you want to buy a house, but their credit is terrible and they have no down payment to contribute.

Or you want to take a year off to start a business, but you’re the only one with any financial cushion.

Or maybe they get laid off and suddenly their emergency is your emergency because they never built their own safety net.

The emotion you’re feeling?

That’s resentment.

It builds slowly, like compound interest in reverse.

And unlike money, you can’t just invest your way out of it.

Why This Hits Women Differently

Here’s the thing that makes this even more important for women: we’re already fighting uphill battles with money.

We still make less on average than men.

We take career breaks for children more often.

We live longer, which means we need more saved for retirement.

We’re more likely to end up as single parents.

And according to a 2024 study by the National Institute on Retirement Security, 50% of women ages 55-66 have no personal retirement savings.

So when we partner with someone who doesn’t take money seriously, who doesn’t invest, who doesn’t plan ahead…

We’re not just taking on their bad habits. We’re potentially sacrificing our own financial security.

And let’s be honest: society still expects women to be the “flexible” ones.

To sacrifice our careers when someone needs to stay home with the kids.

To move for our partner’s job opportunity.

To be understanding when money is tight.

But understanding doesn’t pay for retirement. Flexibility doesn’t build wealth.

The Conversation You Need to Have

Before you get serious with someone, before you move in together, definitely before you get married, you need to have an honest talk about money.

Ask the hard questions:

How do you view money?

Are you a saver or spender?

Do you invest?

What are your financial goals?

What does retirement look like to you?

How do you feel about debt?

Do you believe in building long-term wealth or just earning a paycheck?

Watch how they react.

Do they get defensive? Do they think you’re being “too serious” or “unromantic”?

Or do they appreciate that you’re thinking ahead?

Someone who’s truly aligned with you will be open to have this conversation.

Because they’ve been thinking about the same things.

It’s Not About Being Materialistic

I know what some people are thinking:

“This sounds so materialistic. What about love?“

But here’s the hard truth:

Loving someone doesn’t mean you should ignore massive incompatibilities that will make you both miserable.

And honestly, if wanting a partner who takes their financial future seriously makes me materialistic, then I guess I’m materialistic.

But to me it’s being realistic.

Because love doesn’t keep you from being broke at 65.

Love doesn’t prevent resentment when you’ve sacrificed your financial dreams because your partner couldn’t get on board.

Love doesn’t pay for the retirement you’ll spend alone because you outlived your partner by 10 years with no savings.

The Bottom Line

Having a partner who shares your money mindset isn’t about finding someone rich. It’s about finding someone who shares your values around building security, making smart decisions, and working toward freedom.

It’s about being able to dream together without one person constantly dragging you down.

It’s about both of you rowing in the same direction, toward a future the two of you actually want.

Because here’s the tough love:

You can build wealth on a modest income if you’re both committed. But you can’t build wealth if you’re constantly fighting about whether building wealth even matters.

Money aligned beats rich every single time.

Have the conversation. Ask the hard questions.

And if you find out you’re not aligned? Better to know now than in five years when you’re drowning in resentment, shared debt and overpriced attorney fees.

You deserve a partner who’s building with you, not holding you back.

Trust me on this one.

I’d love to know your thoughts.

Have you had the money talk with your partner? Hit ‘Reply’ and let me know if this resonates. No judgment, no shame.

Your friend,

Charlie | Your Wealth Hype Girl

📌P.S. If you are in a hole because of a past relationship, I’ve got something coming up to help you get out! I could make more money than I currently had (which was zero btw).

And up until about two years ago, I still thought this way.

The formula was:

Work more = earn more = more is better.

If I wasn’t trying to squeeze every drop of “more” out of my life, I felt like I was being lazy or useless. And the guilt I felt around “wasting my potential” was sometimes crushing.

Don’t get me wrong.

I still wake up every day trying to think of ways to make my business bigger and better — but not just for the sake of being bigger and better.❌

Since I started posting on social media and writing this newsletter, my whole mindset on why I push so hard to make my business successful has shifted.

Hearing from you, and how what I’m sharing has helped inspire you to open your first investment account, get out of credit card debt, or realize that you can build real, lasting wealth to support your family…

My mind — officially blown!🤯🤯

💰Building Quiet Wealth is a reader-supported publication. not as an end goal.

Hope that helps!

Your friend,

Charlie | Your Wealth Hype Girl

<picture></picture>

📌P.S. - Want help figuring out where to start?

I know this framework makes sense in theory, but applying it to your specific situation?
